EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative therapy modality that allows your brain to heal itself from distress following a traumatic or stressful event. When traumatic or stressful events occur, our bodies can often experience stress responses that can interfere with our body’s ability to naturally process and store memories. This can result in our body believing past stressors are still occurring in the present, resulting in ongoing distress.

By practicing awareness of your body’s current reactions to past trauma (i.e. emotions, images, thought-patterns, or physical sensations) and use of bilateral stimulation (back and forth movements through tapping or eye movements), we are able to create a space for the brain to reprocess past traumatic or stressful memories in the way memories were intended to be processed to achieve alleviation from distress related to past events.

While there is no guarantee of counseling outcomes, EMDR has been proven to help recovery from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other trauma and stress-related issues, and ongoing research indicates it is also helpful in recovery from the following:

  • Anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias
  • Chronic illness and medical issues
  • Depressive disorders
  • Grief and loss
  • Pain
  • Performance anxiety
  • Other distressing life experiences

EMDR can be completed as its own support or in addition to individual therapy (with myself or another provider). I’ll help you through this process, tailoring each step to your unique needs and circumstances. My approach to counseling comes from a place of empowerment allowing you the support to gain self-awareness and create changes that will guide you toward balance. You don’t have to live life feeling fearful and disconnected. I can help you find balance, confidence, peace, and joy.
